She initially wanted to become an actress, However, following a dramatic increase in size, her friends weren't able to dance along with her. In an article from the Toronto Star she admitted In heels I'm 6 feet 1 inch. When I outgrew my male friends, I quit. Bruce was among the former dancers that turned into acting. Her high school teacher school encouraged her to take the next step. It was her teacher who encouraged her to try out to play the character of Anne in the school's annual production. The school's production was a success and she was selected to play the main part in Anne of Green Gables after she tried out. It led to a Fine Arts Talent Scholarship at York University where she attended the Theater Program and graduated with an Associate in Fine Arts degree in the year 2000. Over the past 20 years since Brugel has landed roles on more than 60 productions on both small and large screens. She attracted the most media attention after she was offered the part in the role of Rita in the award-winning show The Handmaid's Tale (pictured below).
